Oral Cancer Screening

Half of those diagnosed with oral cancer will not survive more than 5 years, and this cancer alone kills nearly 9 thousand people each year. We take these statistics seriously and perform a full oral examination each and every time you visit us. Because with early detection the chances of survival improve significantly, we want you to be aware of some of the warning signs:

• A red, white or otherwise discolored patch or lump in or around your mouth
• A sore that does not heal or that bleeds easily
• An area that seems to have thickened, raised, or become hardened
• A rough patch of tissue
• Difficulty chewing or swallowing
• Or a chronic sore throat or hoarseness

While none of these symptoms are determinant of oral cancer, it is best to advise our office immediately and schedule an oral screening. It’s vital that you not ignore mouth sores, even if they do not hurt. Most pre-cancerous and cancerous growths are completely painless. Our complete diagnostic suite of tools such as ViziLite and other specialized equipment allows for early detection and, if needed, a precise treatment plan.
